Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States during the mid- to late-1950s. The movement challenged people's beliefs about what should be considered art.

(CLICK THE TITLE TO CONTINUE READING) Mosaic is the art of decorating a surface with pictures and patterns made of little pieces of stone, glass or tiles of different colors (tesserae). Usually the pieces are set in stone or plaster. Mosaics can be very durable when done properly. Many mosaics we see today are actually from the Early Christian and Byzantine eras (from 300 AD to 1400 AD). During this time, mosaics were often used to depict religious subjects. Many Byzantine mosaics were put on walls, which meant that they could be made out of delicate materials such as pearls, glass, and gold leaf. Watch the following video to learn more about Byzantine mosaic materials. Contemporary Mosaic Art These days, mosaic art is still used to decorate public spaces. Below are links to examples of mosaics made by contemporary artists. What similarities do you see between contemporary and Byzantine mosaics? What differences do you see? Sketchbook Assignment: List as many materials as you can think of that could be used to create tesserae.
Sample Ice Cream Plan Below is a sample ice cream plan based on the painting above. Remember that you are not going to create a master study- you are creating your own drawing inspired by the artist that you researched.
Copy the squares/rectangles into your SKETCHBOOK using a ruler to make it neat. If you do not have your sketchbook, grab paper from the scrap bin (green bin) on the cart.
Fill the squares using the techniques specified.
Here is a video demonstrating the techniques above. Watch it if you need to review the techniques at any point.
What Are Oil Pastels?

Below are some examples of work made with oil pastels: Now that you have practiced building a few pinch pots, you will be making a final piece using the same technique!
You will be creating a pinch pot creature. You are free to base your piece on any real or fantasy creature. Look below at the sample works. (CLICK ON THE TITLE TO CONTINUE READING)
If you have never made a ceramic pot, a pinch pot is a good place to start! It is a very simple technique and does not require any special tools.
Watch the following video to get the basics down.
The video below shows a more refined product. The artist does use a scalpel, but there are other ways of giving the pot a flat top!
Once you master this technique, you can make anything that uses a pot shape as a base: mugs, bowls, jewelry holders, etc.
Assignment
Try making your own pinch pots! Make at least three:
What are comic books?Comic books are a kind of sequential art. Sequential means "forming or following in a logical order or sequence." Comic books are made up of individual illustrated frames, called panels. In American comics, panels are read from left to right, but in manga (Japanese comics), panels are read from right to left.
Environmental ArtEnvironmental art is art that is intended to enhance or become part of the environment, or make a statement on environmental issues. There is an extremely large variety of environmental art. Some artists work with natural environments and believe that they shouldn't hurt it in the process. Other artists alter the environment by taking away or adding elements, and other artists even insert themselves into the environment.
